Green gold of India !

Photographs of betel 'heart shaped' leaves on betel vine plant, being grown in the villages of East Midnapore district of West Bengal. As per paper by P Guha, Betel Leaf: The Neglected Green Gold of India (the title used in the blog entry is credited from his paper) there are about 100 varieties of betel vine in the world, of which about 40 are found in India and 30 in West Bengal.
Betel leaves are popularly used as a 'paan' leaves in India. In adition to Paan, betel leaves are known to be useful for the treatment of various diseases. Its root can be used for female contraceptive effects and oil for its medicinal use. The scientific name of betel vine is Piper betle L., family Piperaceae.
