Taxi drivers need to be encouraged to help injured on the road

Sunday Kolkata was raining, it was pleasant tough humid but better than other day. Amer Ali Avenue, one of the main roads of south kolkata was witness to an accident. Close to Birla Temple crossing, at about 1.45 pm a taxi carrying three people suddenly lost control on skiddy road and bumped into the iron divider of the road. All of us rush to the spot to save the people in the cab. There were three people in it in addition to driver, mother, father and their daughter. They were taken out of the cab. Driver, father and daughter were bleeding but thankfully lives were saved. Police van was at the spot almost immediately. Those who were bleeding needed medical care. They had to betaken to hospital. But painful part was that there were three taxi standing on the spot but all three refused to take the injured to the nearest hospital. We got down from taxi, which we had hired and requested him to take the injured to the hospital but instead of that he just whisked away – very unfortunate. I could not note the taxi numbers or else would have definitely told the police. Anyway police being there helped and their luggage was put in cab no 4318 and they were driven to hospital and home.

But this incident was unfortunate wherein taxi refuses to take people who get injured in an accident to medical facility. I hope this was one of the rare incidents. But was not sure why the taxi drivers refused. May be they fear some police action or why ?. Kolkata city sees many accidents in day, taxi drivers should be encouraged to take injured to medical care and those who do should be rewarded, may be an encouragement to others. Or else today it was someone else, may be someday we or someone known to us is in need of care. I wish this does not get repeated anytime anywhere in India.
